HatLab · Last updated 20 September 2026

HatLab is a studio for Islamic calligraphy. You write with a stylus or a finger, and the app measures the angle of your reed and the proportions of your letters against the classical rules. Everything runs on your device.

1. Who you are agreeing with

HatLab is published by Safiye Meram, Esenler/Istanbul, Türkiye. You can reach the publisher at gelistirbizi@gmail.com. By installing or using the app you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the app.

2. What the app is, and what it is not

HatLab is a teaching and measuring tool. It is not a teacher, and a score from it is not a licence.

  • The reference letterforms are constructed from the classical proportion tables of each hand. They are built by the app from the dot measure, not copied from any master's sheet.
  • A score describes how closely one attempt matched those proportions on this device. It is not an ijaza, not a qualification, and it carries no standing with any institution.
  • Angles read from a stylus depend on the hardware. On a device without a stylus the app holds the reed at the correct angle for you so that you can work on the shape instead.

3. The Qur'anic text in the app

The app carries Qur'anic text in Arabic so that it can be written and traced. The text is in the public domain and is shown as set text beside your sheet. It is presented with respect, it is never gamified, and it is available without payment. What is paid for is the teaching modules and the studio tools, never scripture.

If you find a typographic error in any Arabic text, please write to gelistirbizi@gmail.com and it will be corrected in the next update.

4. Your work belongs to you

Everything you write in HatLab is yours. The publisher claims no rights over it, receives no copy of it and cannot see it.

5. Purchases

HatLab is free to install and a full free path is included: nib calibration, the dot ladder, the first upright and the first eight letters in Naskh and Thuluth.

  • HatLab Premium unlocks the remaining hands, the whole curriculum, deep telemetry, the report card history, unlimited kept sheets and the full inkwell.
  • Premium is offered as a monthly subscription, a yearly subscription or a single lifetime payment. The price, the period and any free trial are shown on the purchase screen before you buy.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the period. You manage and cancel them in your App Store or Google Play account, not in this app.
  • Payment is taken by Apple or Google. Refunds follow their rules, and the publisher cannot issue them.

6. What is expected of you

  • Do not attempt to unlock paid features by tampering with the app or the store receipt.
  • Do not present a HatLab score as a certification from anyone.
  • Do not use the app in a way that breaks the law where you live.

7. Availability and changes

The app is provided as it is. Features may change between versions, and a version may be withdrawn from the stores. Where a change removes something you have paid for, the publisher will say so in the release notes.

8. Liability

To the extent the law allows, the publisher is not liable for lost practice data, for a device failure, or for any decision you take on the basis of a score. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including your statutory consumer rights.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of Türkiye. Mandatory consumer protections of your own country of residence still apply to you.
