Questions about TickScope, answered by what the app actually does.

It says it cannot find the escapement

  • Press the caseback flat against the bottom edge of the phone, where the microphone is, with no strap or cloth in between.
  • Move away from fans, air conditioning and traffic. The filter removes a great deal, but a loud room with a quiet watch is still a loud room.
  • A quartz watch has nothing to measure. So does a watch that has stopped or is fully unwound.
  • Turn on Lab mode in Settings if you have Pro: it narrows the filter and raises the trigger.

The amplitude looks wrong

Amplitude is calculated from the lift angle of the movement, so a wrong lift angle gives a wrong amplitude by the same proportion. Open the watch in your collection, tap the movement field and pick your calibre from the library: it fills in both the lift angle and the beat rate. If your movement is not listed, most modern ones are 52 degrees, and co-axial escapements are much lower.

The rate jumps around

Hold the phone and the watch still, and give the reading fifteen seconds to settle. The number printed under the rate is its uncertainty: it falls as the session gets longer, and a sixty second measurement is far tighter than a ten second one. If the beat rate itself keeps changing, lock it: tap the beat rate tile and choose your movement's value.

Why do two phones disagree?

Because an audio input that reports 48 kHz rarely runs at exactly 48 kHz. TickScope measures its own clock against the system clock during every session and corrects for the difference, which is why the first few seconds say it is calibrating. You can see the measured drift in Settings.

I bought Pro but the features are locked

Open the purchase screen and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you are signed in with the same App Store or Google Play account you bought with. If it still does not unlock, write to us with the store receipt.

How do I cancel a subscription?

On iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions. On Android: Play Store, your profile, Payments and subscriptions. We cannot cancel a store subscription for you.

Does it work offline?

Completely. Put the phone in airplane mode and every measurement, every report and every export works the same. The only thing that needs a network is buying or restoring Pro.

Where are my measurements kept?

On this phone only, in the app's own storage. They do not move to another phone and deleting the app deletes them. Pro can export everything as CSV or as a PDF report, which is the way to keep a copy.
