Questions about OptiBlink, answered by what the app actually does.

It says it is looking for me and never finds me

  • Make sure your whole face is in front of the phone, not above or below it. The front camera has to see both eyes.
  • A very dark room is the usual cause. The model needs enough light to find an eyelid edge; a lamp behind the phone, not behind you, fixes it.
  • Strong backlight, such as a bright window directly behind you, turns your face into a silhouette. Turn around.
  • Glasses are fine. Heavy reflections on the lenses are not: tilt the phone slightly.

The distance looks wrong

Without calibration the distance is worked out from a typical front camera and can be out by around ten per cent in either direction. Open Settings and tap Calibrate: hold the phone at a distance you have actually measured, such as the long edge of an A4 sheet, which is 30 cm, and tap Measure. It takes a second and only has to be done once per phone.

The other thing that changes the reading is eye spacing. The app assumes an adult, and a child's eyes are closer together, which reads as further away. If a child is holding the phone, switch the eye spacing preset in Settings.

The blink rate seems too low

That is often the honest answer: in front of a screen most people blink four or five times a minute rather than eighteen. Give the reading fifteen seconds to settle first, and check that the eye drawn in the middle of the dial closes when you blink. If it does not move at all, the app is not seeing your eyes clearly; see the lighting notes above.

Does it use a lot of battery?

The camera runs at a low resolution and about ten frames a second, which is a small fraction of what recording video costs. If you want less again, turn on Battery saver in Settings: it samples five seconds out of every twenty, for roughly a quarter of the power, and the blink rate becomes a good estimate rather than an exact count.

Why does tracking stop when I switch apps?

Because the camera is released the moment OptiBlink leaves the screen, deliberately. An app that kept the camera open in the background would be doing exactly the thing this one promises not to do. The session is saved when it stops, so nothing measured is lost.

I bought Pro but the features are locked

Open the purchase screen and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you are signed in with the same App Store or Google Play account you bought with. If it still does not unlock, write to us with the store receipt.

How do I cancel a subscription?

On iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions. On Android: Play Store, your profile, Payments and subscriptions. We cannot cancel a store subscription for you.

Does it work offline?

Completely. Put the phone in airplane mode and every measurement, chart, report and export works the same. The only thing that needs a network is buying or restoring Pro.

Where are my measurements kept?

On this phone only, in the app's own storage. They do not move to another phone and deleting the app deletes them. Pro can export everything as CSV, which is the way to keep a copy.
