Terms & Conditions

Ottoman Script Reader · Last updated 20 September 2026

By installing Ottoman Script Reader you agree to these terms. They are short on purpose.

1. What the app is

Ottoman Script Reader, also published as Lisan-ı Osmani, is a self-study course for reading Ottoman Turkish: the Arabic-script orthography in which Turkish was written until 1928. It is published by Safiye Meram, Esenler/Istanbul, Türkiye.

It teaches letter shapes, how letters join, the vowel letters elif, vav, ye and he, the spelling of Turkish suffixes, and the reading of short sentences, proverbs and monument inscriptions. It is a teaching tool, not a scholarly edition and not a translation service.

2. No account

There is no registration, no login and no password. The app runs entirely on your device and works with no network connection at all. Nothing identifies you to us.

3. Free and paid

Modules 1 and 2, the full alphabet reference, the first 50 library entries and 20 spaced-repetition reviews a day are free and stay free.

Premium unlocks Modules 3 to 5, the full library of 614 analysed entries, unlimited daily reviews, the Riq'a cursive typeface, letter-tracing practice and the detailed progress statistics. It is sold as a monthly subscription, a yearly subscription or a one-off lifetime purchase.

4. Payment, renewal and cancellation

All purchases go through Apple's App Store or Google Play. We never see your card and never handle your money.

  • Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
  • Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of the current period.
  • You manage and cancel subscriptions in your App Store or Google Play account settings, not in this app.
  • The lifetime purchase is a single payment. It never renews and never expires.
  • Any free trial ends when a subscription is bought; unused trial time is forfeited, which is the store's rule, not ours.

Refunds are handled by Apple and Google under their own policies. Write to us and we will tell you honestly whether we think you have a case, but we cannot issue the refund ourselves.

5. What you may and may not do

You get a personal, non-transferable licence to use the app and its content for your own study and teaching. You may quote from it with attribution.

You may not resell the content as a dataset, bulk-extract it, or republish the analysed corpus as your own. The lexicon, the transcriptions and the letter analyses were written for this app.

6. Scholarly accuracy

Ottoman spelling was never fully standardised, and a good many words have more than one attested spelling. Where that is so, the app shows the form most common in late Ottoman print and notes the variant. Readings are given in the transcription convention stated in the app.

The app is a study aid. Do not rely on it alone for legal, genealogical or scholarly work on a document that matters. If you find an error, write to us and we will fix it; corrections ship in the next update.

7. Your progress is not backed up

Everything you do is stored on your device only. We hold no copy. If you delete the app, change phone or wipe the device, your progress is gone and we cannot restore it. Your purchase can be restored, because the store holds that record.

8. Liability

The app is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing here limits rights you have under Turkish consumer law, the laws of your own country, or the App Store and Google Play terms.

9. Changes

If these terms change in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and the app tells you. Continuing to use the app means you accept the new terms.

10. Law and contact

These terms are governed by Turkish law. Questions, complaints and corrections: gelistirbizi@gmail.com.
